Es Vedrà, the rock that captivates all of Ibiza
There is a moment on every trip to Ibiza when Es Vedrà suddenly appears: a nearly 400-metre rock rising out of the sea off the southwest coast. You don't need to board any boat to experience it. From the road and from several viewpoints on dry land you can enjoy it just as well, and far more calmly. I'm Ilian, a private chauffeur in Ibiza for the past twelve years, and this corner of the island is, without a doubt, the one my clients ask for most.
In this guide I'll show you how to explore southwest Ibiza by road: the best Es Vedrà viewpoints you can reach by car, Cala d'Hort beach and its restaurants, a relaxed full-day itinerary and, above all, why it pays to leave the driving to someone who knows these narrow roads by heart.
The best Es Vedrà viewpoints by car
The southwest packs in several observation points, all reachable by road. These are my favourites, in the order I usually take you:
- Cala d'Hort. The classic postcard. From the beach itself and from the upper car park you have Es Vedrà right in front of you, framed by pine trees. It's the perfect place for your first look and for lunch with a view.
- Torre des Savinar (Pirate Tower). An 18th-century watchtower perched on a cliff. I drop you at the closest point the car can reach, and from there it's a short walk to the most spectacular viewpoint of all, with Es Vedrà and its little brother, Es Vedranell, at your feet.
- Es Vedrà Mirador. A purpose-built platform right beside the road, easy and effortless, ideal if you'd rather not walk. Perfect for quick photos and for travellers with children or reduced mobility.
- Cala Carbó. A small, quiet cove very close to Cala d'Hort, with a couple of excellent beach restaurants and fewer people. A great alternative for a lazy afternoon.
Cala d'Hort: beach, calm and good food
Cala d'Hort is a sand-and-shingle beach with crystal-clear water, protected by its status as a nature reserve. The sea is usually calm and it's a wonderful spot to spend a few unhurried hours. Because it's a protected area, access and parking are limited, and that's exactly where a chauffeur makes the difference: I drop you right at the entrance and take care of the rest.
Just above the beach sit two long-established restaurants, El Carmen and Es Boldadó, both specialising in rice dishes and fresh fish, with Es Vedrà as their backdrop. These are places to book in advance, especially in high season. If you prefer something more casual, the beach shacks at Cala Carbó are a superb alternative. My advice: eat with a view at midday and save the sunset for the viewpoint.
A relaxed one-day itinerary by road
Here's how I usually plan a full day around the southwest, unrushed and making the most of the light:
- Late-morning start. Pick-up at your hotel or villa. First stop at the Es Vedrà Mirador for the photo and to get your bearings.
- Midday at Cala d'Hort. A couple of hours on the beach and a leisurely lunch at El Carmen or Es Boldadó.
- Mid-afternoon at Torre des Savinar. The walk up to the tower and the time spent taking it all in are the heart of the day.
- Sunset. Back to a good sunset spot to close the day with the sky ablaze behind the rock.
The whole route is by land, comfortable and at your own pace. If you'd like to add a stop in the village of Sant Josep or at a local winery, we adjust on the go.
The golden hour: when to catch the sunset
Es Vedrà is famous for its sunsets, and getting the timing right is everything. In summer (June to August) the sun sets around 9:00-9:30 pm; in spring and autumn, between 7:30 and 8:30 pm. My recommendation is to arrive at the viewpoint about forty-five minutes early: that way you find a spot calmly, watch the light shift over the rock and avoid the last-minute crowd. I keep track of the timing for you and choose the best-oriented spot depending on the day.
Why a chauffeur on these roads
The southwest roads are narrow, full of tight bends and thick with pine. In high season, the car parks at Cala d'Hort and the viewpoints fill up very early, and finding a space can cost you a wasted hour and plenty of stress. With a private chauffeur, that problem disappears: I drop you at the door, I park, and I'm there waiting whenever you want to change plans. You can enjoy the wine at lunch, take photos along the way and truly relax, without worrying about the wheel or the drive home after dark on roads you don't know.
